Method of cooking:

Fist of all, we cut an onion and fry it, using olive oil.
Then we pour chicken broth in a pot and put fried onion there. We peel tomatoes, potatoes, a carrot, a marrow, a sweet pepper. All ingredients, except tomatoes, we cut in cubes and put in the pot. As for tomatoes, we cut them in cubes too and stew on a frying pan. After that we can put tomatoes in the pot. Salt and pepper our soup. It is ready when potatoes are ready.
Before serving out, it is better to add some grated cheese and cut dill, parsley and green onion in every plate.
This soup is low-fat and low-caloric.

My daughter Anya studies in Vienna and attends evening classes in German. Students are from different countries of the world there – the French, Spaniards, Italians and one American, who fell in love with an Austrian and was building the rainbow plans of life together. One day they talked on a subject “my day”.

When my daughter’s time came, she stood up and simply told that every day she wakes up, brushes up and wakes her boyfriend. As long as he splashes in the bathroom, she cooks breakfast, followed by a quick clean up, and along with the boyfriend she goes to the university. After classes she goes to work, and in the evening on the way home she comes into the store, buys food, cleans, cooks dinner and waits for her beloved. When he arrives, they have dinner and get ready for tomorrow lessons, relax, read, play on the computer or go for a walk or to the cinema. Then they come back, and she still manages to iron her boyfriend’s suit and shirt, while her dear is preparing for bed.

When Anya finished her story, she realized that she had said something wrong. In the audience was dead silence, and only her Italian friend asked hopefully:
‘You thought all this up, huh?’
‘And why?’ waved my daughter, ‘I’ve described as it is!’
And at that moment she realized that her simple story shook all men, oppressed with emancipation to the marrow.

The popularity of Russian girls in courses has increased dramatically.

If you decide to visit this city, it means you are a brave spirit. It is situated in the Far North in the Arctic on the 69th parallel. There is nothing around the city, only tundra with a huge amount of small lakes and bogs.

On the score of distance of Norilsk from other cities and absence of land communication, citizens call the rest of Russia “mainland”.

This north city was founded in 1935 by political prisoners. The first house was built by the members of Urvantsev’s expedition in 1921. It still exists as the museum “The first Norilsk house”. In 1953 north Norilsk got a status of a city. Nowadays, according to the census of 2008, the population is about 206 thousand people. Because of different reasons a lot of thousand people leave the city.

The weather is very changeable and harsh. Winter is cold and long. If you like snow it is the best place for admiring it. Land can be covered with snow about 240 days a year. Summer is short. Usually there are two or three weeks of summer. The warmest months are July and August. The average temperature of January is 10 degrees below zero. The average temperature of July is 14 degrees above zero. It is only average temperatures and it doesn’t sound like something unbelievable. But sometimes people, waking up in the morning and going to work or study, listen to a weather forecast and understand that it is better to put warmer clothes on. The reason is that the temperature can be even 60 degrees below zero. Just that temperature was registered like the most minimum one. So, going to Norilsk, don’t forget to take warm clothes and … steady shoes! Imagine you walking in the slick street. It is getting windy and speed of wind can reach 40 km/h. You can’t keep walking; you simply slide as on skates.

If you have ever been in Sankt Petersburg, you can represent the architecture of Norilsk. It is similar, especially the main street, Leninskii prospect. It is also the longest street in Norilsk; its length is about 2 kilometers. It is enough about one hour to walk around the city, because it is very small and compact.

Nowadays there are a lot of places where people go to have a rest. The young population chooses clubs, cinemas, bowling and billiards, the older population goes to the only drama theater in the center of the city. If the weather remains pretty well, fans of winter sport go to countryside. There are a lot of mountains in tundra with beautiful small waterfalls. When these mountains are covered with snow, sportsmen use some of them for descent on alpine skis and snowboards. Have you ever done it with a swimsuit or shorts on? Imagine, today it is 30 below zero and in three days it is going to be 30 degrees above zero! And it is not a joke.

However, the climate is very severe and it is the main reason why people spend more time indoors. So, if you go to a club, you know that you’ll say “hi” heaps of times. You can meet people from your school, university, job or sport club there. It always happens with every citizen of the city.

Norilsk is famous for its metallurgical complex “Norilsk nickel”, the main center of non-ferrous- metals industry. Nickel, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, iridium and other non-ferrous and precious metals are produced there. The Taimyr tundra is very rich in minerals. You can also find here the “Nadezhda” Metallurgical Plant, one of the biggest in Europe.

With this city names of famous people are connected, such as Vladimir Potanin, Michael Prohorov and many others.

To the colors of the State flag are attributed a lot of symbolic meanings. There is no official meaning assigned to the colors of the State flag of the Russian Federation.

At first the flag, consisted of three white-blue-red colors, was mentioned during the reign of Tsar Alexis I in 1668. The flag was on the first Russian ship, called Oryol. Soon it was burned and forgotten.

The white-blue-red flag was come back during the reign of Peter I in 1705. Peter I drew a sample and chose the order of horizontal stripes. Nobody knew why Peter I decided to use these colors. It is known exactly that every color has its own meaning.

According to one theory, white means freedom, blue – Holy Mother, red – Great power statehood.
Another theory associates white with nobility, blue with honesty and red with courage and generosity appropriate of Russians.

The tricolor flag was used in Russia for a long time till 1918 when Yakov Sverdlov changed this flag to the red one by his decree.

After 73 years, after August putsch, tricolor fields appeared in the streets of Russia. And after the 22nd of August when such a flag was fitted up the White House, it was established as the State Russian symbol. This date is celebrated yearly as the national Flag Day.

Nowadays (unofficially) the next interpretation of the colors of the Russian flag is used. According to it, white means peace, purity, perfection, blue means faith, fidelity, constancy, red means energy, power and bloody past.

JANUARY

New Year – January 1: New Year’s Day is one the most favorite holidays in Russia. All people are happy on this day. On the Eve of this holiday or just on this day everybody give presents to each other, have fun, make fireworks, decorate and fir-trees, cook delicious things and lay the holiday table. The unchangeable participants of this holiday are Farther Frost and his granddaughter “Snegurochka”(a snow girl). At 11.55 p.m. everyone switches a TV-set on and watches the speech of President of the country. At 12 a.m. Kremlin chiming clock beats 12 times and everyone who believes in good says an intimate wish and thanks God for everything good that had happened that year. The holiday lasts till next morning. For the first time this holiday was announced by Peter 1’st order dated by January 20, 700. This order gave the detailed instructions how to celebrate New Year’s Day. Many people used to see the New Year in on January 14, (according to the old calendar). And the tradition of telling fortunes at this night is very popular among young ladies and fellows, who are willing to know at least a little bit about their near future.

Orthodox Christmas - January 7: This period from 7 till 19th of January is the best period for telling fortunes, as it is the Saint Christmas week, when people have fun, ware fancy-dresses and walk from one home to another asking for favor.
In the night of the 7th of January (according to the orthodox calendar) is Christmas. In Christmas holidays people try to be better, purer; it is the time when Christian values take peculiar importance (meaning), it is time for good deeds. Christmas is a holiday of waiting for miracles. It is a family holiday in Russia.

Old New Year – January 13: Holiday in memory of Old Calendar New Year. It is a family holiday. Nowadays most people don’t celebrate this holiday in Russia because of the late celebrating time. In the morning all have to be at work.

The Student Day ( Tatyana’s Day ) – January 25: In Russia it is a merry holiday of students as on this day January, 25th in 1775 Emperor Elizabeth signed the decree (prepared by count Shuvalov) of the establishment of the Moscow University. Nowadays students celebrate this holiday making performances at universities or going to restaurants.

FEBRUARY

Holiday of lovers – St. Valentine’s Day – February 14: Christian martyr Valentine was condemned to the capital punishment by Roman pagans but even in such cruel conditions he didn’t stop thinking of his lover-the jailer’s daughter. He sent her a message full of love and tenderness.
This holiday, inherited from the Western culture, is now very popular in Russia. People give presents to each other to express sympathy and love.

The Army Day – Men’s Day – February 23: This holiday is celebrated on the 23rd of February. It is our tribute of respect to all the generations of Russian soldiers from the ancient times till nowadays to those who defeated courageously our motherland from invaders. On this day all the masculine representatives from boys to old men receive congratulations and presents and the military men greet each other. Women have a happy opportunity to say the warmest and the sweetest words to their lovers and to please them with sings of attention.

The Pancake Day - February 27 till the beginning of March: It is a holiday of ancient Slavs in honor to east pagan God of fertility. It is a holiday of farewell to the winter and welcome to the spring.
It is previous to the Fast and it is celebrated 7 weeks before Easter. It is a merry folk holiday when old rubbish or hey scarecrow is burnt. Most people put on skins of animals and soil their faces with soot to drive away wicked spirits. The main tradition of this holiday is to cook pancakes.

MARCH

Women’s Day – March 8: Born at a time of great social turbulence and crisis, the International Women’s Day (IWD) inherited a tradition of protest and political activism. In the years before 1910, from the turn of the 20th century, women in industrially developing countries were entering paid work in some numbers. Their jobs were sex segregated, mainly in textiles, manufacturing and domestic services where conditions were wretched and wages worse than depressed. In Europe, the flames of revolution were being kindled.
It was German socialist Clara Zetkin who was the real mother of IWD. In 1907 she had organized an International Conference of Socialist Women and called for all socialist parties to fight energetically for women’s suffrage.

From 1922 Clara Zetkin headed the International Women’s Secretariat of the Communist International in Moscow and IWD became an official Communist holiday. It became International Women’s Day after the Second World War.
March 8 became the first spring holiday in Russia. Up to this day, it is an official day off and both men and women of Russia are looking forward to this holiday. It has long lost its political meaning and is looked upon as a day to celebrate the unconditional love, sacrifice, patience, wisdom, and beauty of the Russian women. They get a lot of flowers, candies and other presents from their men and sons.

APRIL

Fool Day (the Day of laughter) – April 1: They say it is not a sin to laugh at everything that seems to be fun. The medical men confirm that laughter prolong the life. It is considered that those who can laugh at themselves achieve a lot.
Recently this fun holiday didn’t celebrate everywhere but nowadays it has become a custom. Everybody tries to play a trick on others.

Orthodox Easter - two weeks after Catholic Easter: It is the main Christian holyday established in honor to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ crucified on the cross and to the Outcome of the Jews from Egypt.
Easter is hold on the 1st Sunday after the vernal equinox and it is celebrated solemnly and merrily. The date of Easter is usually determined by the church calendar and is calculated according to paschal tables. People cook cakes called paskhas and color eggs. They bring them to churches and the father consecrates Easter cakes and eggs. After it, people can eat them.

MAY

The Holiday of Spring and Labor – May 1: The 1st of May is the traditional holiday of spring. It opens the sequence of other May holidays. This is the day of triumph of the nature which is full of blossom, of birds’ singing, of multicolored flowers and small balls. People have a rest both from the long frosty winter and winter troubles looking forward the summer and summer joy. Nowadays Russians have two days off on the 1st and 2nd of May.

Victory Day – May 9: It is the greatest holyday for Russian people. It is both joy and sorrow. But there is much more on this day because we managed to defend our independence and we won «the brown plague” and stood the test of war with dignity. A great gratitude to those who lost their lives for today’s peace and happiness. And eternal memory will last forever.

JUNE

The International Children’s Day – June 1: What is sunnier, joyful, and memorable than the childhood? A child gets to know the world, learns good and friendship, finds out new in familiar things. A child is happy when he is loved, warmed fed and understood. The children are the future of the mankind. Tomorrow is in their hands. Their right for life and dignity must be respected and defended.
Trinity is the unity of three God’s faces: God Father, God Son and Sacred Spirit. It is a Christian holyday. It is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter hence it follows it’s another name-Pyatidesyatnitsa (the 50th day).
On this day Holy Spirit went down on the Apostles and gave them Christ’s instructions to spread news of Christianity to all the peoples and languages. This holiday is hold according to folk rites.
The dwellings are decorated with twigs of birch. People remember the deceased. In the evening people sing and dance in rings. People also celebrate the Parents’ Saturday.

Independence Day - June 12: is Russia’s newest holiday, which commemorates the adoption in 1991 of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation.

Nowadays students give presents and flowers to teachers and make different performances at schools and universities for them.

DECEMBER

The Constitution Day - December 12: On this date in 1993 the new Constitution of the Russian Federation was approved, a fundamental law of the state, one of the most important democratic institutions.

Moscow was first mentioned in the records dated back to the year 1147. So it was founded more than eight centuries ago by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky. Historians have accepted the year 1147 as the start of Moscow’s history. At that time it was a small frontier post at the edge of Suzdal lands.

By the 15th century Moscow turned into a wealthy city. In the 16th century, under Ivan III, Moscow became the capital of the State of Moskovy.

At that time the Kremlin was rebuilt and the largest Kremlin Cathedrals were erected. Under Dmitriy Donskoy the Kremlin was built of white stone. During the reign of Ivan III the walls of white stone were replaced by new redbrick walls and towers. The Prince invited Italian architects to construct the Cathedrals. The Assumption Cathedral was built in 1475-79. The Russian Tzars and Emperors were crowned there. The Archangel Cathedral was the burial place of the Russian Princes ad Tzars. The Annunciation Cathedral was erected in 1484. It is famous for the icons painted by Andrei Rublev and his apprentices.

On the territory of the Kremlin you can see old Cathedrals, the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, the Palace of Congresses, the Tzar-Canon and the Tzar-Bell, the biggest cannon and bell in the world.

The Kremlin is the heart of Moscow. It is the oldest historical and architectural center of Moscow.

One of the favorite places of tourists in Moscow is Red Square. You can see there a monument to Minin and Pozharsky in Red Square. During the Troubled Times Moscow was occupied by the Polish invaders, but they were routed by the popular levy headed by Minin and Pozharsky. St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the mid-16th century in memory of the victory over Kazan.

Though Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712, Moscow remained the heart of Russia. That is why it became the main target of Napoleon’s attack. Three-quarters of the city were destroyed by fire during Napoleon’s occupation, but by the mid-19th century Moscow had been completely restored.
Moscow became the capital again after the Great October Revolution.
Now Moscow is the capital of Russia, its political, economic, commercial and cultural center, one of the largest cities in Europe. Its total area is about nine hundred square kilometers.

According to the Census of 2009 year the population of the city is about 10 500 000 people.

Moscow was one of the most expensive cities in the world from 2006 to 2008. In 2009 because of the crisis it gave up the place to Japan’s cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

Moscow is a port of five seas, as the Moscow-Volga Canal links Moscow with the Baltic, White, Caspian and Black seas and the Sea of Azov.

It is necessary to mention such famous monuments as monuments to the great Russian writer Alexander Pushkin and to the first printer Ivan Fedorov.

Visiting the capital of Russia a lot of foreigners from all over the world come to see these monuments.

One of the highest buildings in Moscow is the State Moscow University. It was founded in 1755 by the great scientist Mikhail Lomonosov.

Nowadays in the center of the capital (Krasnopresnenskaya station) Moscow International Business Center (MIBC) “Moscow City” is built. The project of creation of this center is the biggest of the existent and being realized at present Projects of Russia and Europe, the decision of creation of which was made by the Government of Moscow in the beginning of 90-s.

Because Moscow is a very big city, its transport must be comfortable and fast.
You can see a lot of cars (about 3.5 millions cars), trolley-buses, and trams in the streets of our city. The Moscow subway began its work on the 15th of May, 1935. There were 13 stations at that time. Now it has 190 stations. Moscow’s subway is very beautiful and convenient.
There are nine railway stations in Moscow and five airports around the city.

Moscow is a city of students. There are over 80 higher educational institutes in it, including several universities.
