The State flag of the Russian Federation is a tricolor horizontal field, white on the top, blue in the middle and red on the bottom.
To the colors of the State flag are attributed a lot of symbolic meanings. There is no official meaning assigned to the colors of the State flag of the Russian Federation.

At first the flag, consisted of three white-blue-red colors, was mentioned during the reign of Tsar Alexis I in 1668. The flag was on the first Russian ship, called Oryol. Soon it was burned and forgotten.

The white-blue-red flag was come back during the reign of Peter I in 1705. Peter I drew a sample and chose the order of horizontal stripes. Nobody knew why Peter I decided to use these colors. It is known exactly that every color has its own meaning.

According to one theory, white means freedom, blue – Holy Mother, red – Great power statehood.
Another theory associates white with nobility, blue with honesty and red with courage and generosity appropriate of Russians.

The tricolor flag was used in Russia for a long time till 1918 when Yakov Sverdlov changed this flag to the red one by his decree.

After 73 years, after August putsch, tricolor fields appeared in the streets of Russia. And after the 22nd of August when such a flag was fitted up the White House, it was established as the State Russian symbol. This date is celebrated yearly as the national Flag Day.

Nowadays (unofficially) the next interpretation of the colors of the Russian flag is used. According to it, white means peace, purity, perfection, blue means faith, fidelity, constancy, red means energy, power and bloody past.
